New Mexico Governor Visits San Juan County Flood Zone on October 26 After Requesting Federal Emergency Declaration

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham traveled to San Juan County on October 26 to survey damage from historic flooding along the San Juan and Animas Rivers and meet with local officials, first responders and families. The San Juan River crested near Shiprock on October 24 at its highest level since 1935, overflowing its banks.

On Saturday the governor requested a federal Emergency Declaration for San Juan County and surrounding areas that would unlock at least $13.8 million for relief efforts plus millions more for environmental remediation; the request also covers Rio Arriba, Cibola and Sandoval counties and five tribal communities. Because the state had declared a statewide flooding emergency on September 30, a total of $3.75 million was immediately available for counties needing emergency help.

Emergency response costs total an estimated $4.5 million so far, with another $13.7 million projected over the next 48 hours. About 58 New Mexico National Guard members deployed with swift-water rescue teams, hoist helicopters and boats, and a Texas search-and-rescue team is assisting through interstate mutual aid. Separately, on October 23 the governor asked for a Major Disaster Declaration to repair an estimated $27.1 million in damage to roads and public infrastructure across 14 counties and three tribal nations from storms between September 20 and October 2.
