A 16-year-old boy in Mesa, Arizona, has been indicted by a grand jury in a shooting involving an off-duty police officer and a security guard. Mesa police Detective Laura Cervantes said on October 26 that a grand jury indicted Jesus Daniel Felix Lomeli Figueroa on October 19 on one count of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, plus three aggravated assault charges and two firearm charges.

Police said that on the night of October 10, Figueroa was denied entry to a private event at Versalles Reception Hall, near Stapley Drive and Main Street, then pointed a handgun at a security guard and fired before running toward a vehicle; the guard and the off-duty officer followed and fired at him. Figueroa and a man in a vehicle associated with him were hospitalized with wounds that were not considered life-threatening.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said Figueroa is being prosecuted as an adult. Mesa police noted that Arizona law requires adult prosecution for juveniles ages 15 to 17 accused of certain violent felonies.
