Larimore Fire Department in North Dakota Issues Harvest Fire Alert on October 26 After Multiple Combine Fires

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Larimore Fire Department in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, issued a harvest fire alert on October 26, urging farmers to take extra precautions after the department responded to multiple combine fires in recent days as harvest continues in dry conditions.

Fire officials say long hours in the field, dry crops and dust buildup on machinery can create dangerous fire hazards, and once a fire starts it can spread quickly through equipment and standing or cut crops.

The department asks farmers and equipment operators to check machinery frequently for excessive heat, dust and crop residue and other potential ignition sources, and recommends that every combine, tractor, truck and other piece of harvest equipment carry at least one properly charged and accessible fire extinguisher. Farmers should call 911 at the first sign of smoke, unusual odors or overheating rather than waiting, and should only try to extinguish a fire if it is clearly safe to do so; if the fire grows or threatens anyone nearby, people should move away and keep a safe distance, officials stress.
