Arkansas Death Row Inmate, 66, Reaches Deal to Trade Death Sentence for Life in Prison

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Arkansas death row inmate Eric Reid has agreed to a deal that replaces his death sentence with life in prison. The anti-death penalty group Execution Intervention Project announced on October 26 that Reid, 66, agreed to the deal that day in Garland County Circuit Court in Hot Springs.

Reid was sentenced to death in 2018 for the 2015 shootings of his wife, Laura Reid, whom he shot and killed after an argument with his daughter, and his daughter Mary Ann Reid, at whom he fired several times. His attorney, Lee Short, said the deal came after new evidence was presented to the Garland County Prosecuting Attorney's office. Reid's spiritual advisor, the Rev. Jeff Hood, said the deal allows the state to punish a murderer while moving past the death penalty.

According to the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Reid was one of 23 men on the state's death row. Arkansas has not carried out an execution since April 2017, when then-Gov. Asa Hutchinson ordered eight executions over an 11-day period.
