Energy Department Map Omitting Vermont Draws Attention as 63 Tribal Energy Projects Win Over $125 Million in Funding

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

A U.S. map posted on the Department of Energy's official X account drew widespread attention this week because it appeared to show the entire United States with one state missing: Vermont. Users were quick to flag the error — a community note on X asked simply, "Vermont?" — and some suggested super intelligence had been used to create the map; the department did not confirm whether SI was involved.

The graphic had been posted to promote a round of funding for Tribal communities. The selections, announced on October 22, chose 63 Tribal-led energy projects for negotiations over more than $125 million in federal funding, including bringing electricity to Tribal homes that currently lack it, converting others to natural-gas heating and upgrading community infrastructure, with Alaska and Oklahoma seeing the largest numbers of projects.

The Energy Department said the decisions were consistent with President Donald Trump's "Unleashing American Energy" executive order, and noted that Tribal households face energy costs 28 percent higher than the national average, while about 17,000 Tribal homes lack electricity.
