Former Fort Collins School Counselor Sentenced in Child Sex Exploitation Case; Gets 16 Years in Prison

Former Poudre School District counselor Cassandra Poncelow was sentenced on October 26 in Fort Collins, Colorado. Under a plea agreement, she had pleaded guilty on July 24 to two counts of sexual exploitation of children, a Class 3 felony; she received 16 years in prison on one count and 10 years of sex offender intensive supervision probation on the other, with the probation to follow her prison term. Judge Daniel McDonald presided over the sentencing hearing.
Poncelow, now 41, worked for Poudre School District from 2007 to 2024 and was named the 2016 Colorado Counselor of the Year. She was arrested in August 2025 after a former student reported to Fort Collins police that Poncelow had an inappropriate relationship with her while working at the district; a second victim later came forward with similar accusations. Both victims were juveniles at the time but are now adults.
At the hearing, victims, family members and supporters described years of manipulation and abuse and urged a lengthy sentence. Judge McDonald said he did not believe several of Poncelow's statements, and criticized how concerns raised by teachers years earlier were never formally documented or reported. A district spokesperson said student safety is the district's highest responsibility, that employees receive mandatory reporting training, and that the district cooperates with law enforcement investigations.
