Delaware Highway Safety Office Issues Halloween Pedestrian Safety Tips, Urges Extra Caution at Night

October is National Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month, and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) issued Halloween pedestrian safety tips from Dover on October 26, noting that with children trick-or-treating after dark and drivers sharing the road with pedestrians, a few extra precautions can help keep everyone safe.
Citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the office said 17% of children age 14 and younger killed in traffic crashes in 2024 were pedestrians, and that 76% of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark, underscoring the importance of visibility and extra caution during evening activities such as Halloween trick-or-treating.
The tips include helping kids be seen by carrying glow sticks or flashlights, using reflective tape or stickers on costumes and trick-or-treat bags, and choosing light-colored clothing; supervising young children while trick-or-treating; crossing streets at corners and crosswalks and looking both ways; and choosing costumes that fit properly to prevent trips and falls, with face paint preferred over masks that can limit a child's vision. Drivers were urged to slow down and stay alert, especially in residential neighborhoods, since excited children may unexpectedly enter the roadway.
