Follow-Up: DOJ Announces Election-Crime Charges Against 48 Noncitizens in Five States, 28 of Them in California

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on October 26 that 48 noncitizens in Pennsylvania, California, Florida, New York and Nevada have been charged with election-related crimes, including voting illegally in federal elections, fraudulent voter registration, falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register or vote, and making false statements in naturalization applications. California accounts for 28 of the 48 defendants, the most of any state.
Nine of the defendants, all in Pennsylvania, are the same individuals whose charges GSM reported earlier: the U.S. Attorney's Offices for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania announced those nine cases on October 23. Monday's announcement by Justice Department headquarters consolidates cases from all five states, with the 39 defendants in California, Florida, New York and Nevada presented together for the first time.
California's 28 defendants are spread across four federal districts. Thirteen in the Central District face felony charges, many involving false statements in naturalization applications: Omar Alexander Muñoz, 72, a Belizean national, is accused of registering to vote in 2019 while claiming to be a U.S. citizen, voting repeatedly from 2020 through 2024, and swearing in his naturalization application that he had never claimed to be a citizen. Six defendants in the Eastern District are charged with voting by an alien, a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in prison; five in the Northern District and four in the Southern District face charges largely involving fraudulent registration, voting and false statements in the naturalization process.
Of the remaining states, six defendants were charged in the Middle District of Florida, one in the Northern District of New York and three in the Eastern District of New York, and one in the District of Nevada, mostly involving lawful permanent residents who registered and voted in the 2022 and 2024 federal elections.
The Justice Department stressed that complaints, indictments and informations merely contain accusations, and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
