Idaho Man Sentenced for Insurance Fraud Over a Raft He Never Owned

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Idaho Department of Insurance announced Oct. 22 that Justin Moss of Kuna has been sentenced for insurance fraud. Moss had filed a claim with Progressive Insurance reporting that a Maravia Williwaw whitewater raft and personal property were stolen, seeking more than $17,000. Investigators found he never owned the raft: he had obtained its serial number from the actual owner while the boat was listed for sale, and never purchased it.

Moss pleaded guilty to two counts of insurance fraud on July 17, 2026. On Oct. 7, he was sentenced in Ada County to five years in prison, suspended in favor of five years of probation, plus 60 days in jail and fines and restitution. 'Attempting to collect insurance benefits for property you do not own is fraud,' said Department Director Dean L. Cameron.
