North Carolina Woman Charged With Insurance Fraud Over Fake Hit-and-Run Claim

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced Oct. 23 the arrest of Lashonda Renee Brown of Wendell. Brown was charged with insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies, and with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege Brown falsely reported to Peak Property and Casualty Insurance Corp. and the State Highway Patrol that her 2016 Mazda was struck by a hit-and-run driver, when the damage actually occurred in a different crash, and received an insurance payment of $6,673.70. The offense allegedly occurred on July 12, and Brown was given a $20,000 secured bond. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
