USDA to Invest $57 Million to Boost Meat Processing Capacity: 147 Tentative Awards Across 40 States

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on October 26 that Vice President J.D. Vance and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins will direct $57,424,130 to ranchers in 40 states to expand capacity and create new and better markets through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP), in 147 tentative awards.

Rollins said President Trump is focused on putting American ranchers first, and that the investment in small and medium-sized meat processors builds on his executive order promoting fair competition in livestock markets and expanding market access for American meat producers. Rebuilding the American cattle herd, she said, requires more local processing opportunities to give ranchers confidence to grow. The program is managed by USDA Rural Development's Rural Business-Cooperative Services and is open to independently owned, domestically owned for-profit and nonprofit entities, producer-owned cooperatives, Tribes and Tribal entities, and state or local governments.

USDA said it has awarded more than $200 million to independent businesses under MPPEP, creating thousands of jobs, in a program designed to encourage competition and sustainable growth in the meat processing sector and improve supply chain resiliency.
