WASHINGTON — The United States Mint announced on October 26 its newest circulating coin program, the Youth Sports Coin Collection, sharing the coin designs for 2027 publicly for the first time. Beginning in 2027 and continuing through 2030, the Mint will issue five quarter-dollar coins per year featuring youth sports, and one half-dollar coin per year showcasing Paralympic sports. The program is authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330), signed into law on January 13, 2021, by President Donald J. Trump.

Each quarter in the collection will have a design on the reverse (tails) emblematic of a sport played by American youth, with a common obverse (heads) depicting a likeness of George Washington in a new design created specifically for the program. Each half dollar will have a reverse design emblematic of a sport tailored to athletes with a range of disabilities, including physical impairment, vision impairment and intellectual impairment, with a common obverse featuring a likeness of John F. Kennedy, also created specifically for the program.

The sports lineup for the four-year program is set. Youth Sports Quarters: 2027 — Baseball, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Snowboarding; 2028 — American Football, Swimming, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Track & Field; 2029 — Basketball, Wrestling, Tennis, Cheerleading, Karate; 2030 — Figure Skating, Skiing, Skateboarding, Volleyball, Ice Hockey. Paralympic Sports Half Dollars: 2027 — Wheelchair Basketball; 2028 — Para Climbing; 2029 — Para Ice Hockey; 2030 — Para Snowboarding.

"Participation in sports teaches teamwork, perseverance, and the value of working toward a common goal," said Mint Director Paul Hollis. "Through the Youth Sports Coin Collection, the Mint has a unique opportunity to instill a sense of national pride and to celebrate the role sports play in the lives of all Americans."

Public participation played an important role in developing the program. The Mint developed a list of sports for public consideration in consultation with the President's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and from January 22 through February 20, 2025, members of the public reviewed the list and shared their preferences through an online survey. The Mint said the collection builds on its longstanding tradition of leveraging circulating coins to tell the American story, providing a new opportunity for young people, families, athletes, coaches, and coin collectors to engage with the nation's coinage.

Congress created the United States Mint in 1792, and the Mint became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873. As the nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage, the Mint is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the nation to conduct its trade and commerce, and also produces numismatic products including proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins, Congressional Gold Medals, and silver and gold bullion coins. Its numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to taxpayers.
