Olivia Colman Fantasy Romance 'Wicker' Opens to $5.7M in Fifth Place, a First Clear Hit for Distributor Black Bear

According to Box Office Mojo, the Olivia Colman fantasy romance Wicker opened to $5.7 million from 1,471 theaters over the October 23–25 weekend, good for fifth place in North America and one of the strongest debuts of the frame. The result gives distributor Black Bear its first clear hit since it began releasing its own films this year, after a string of earlier disappointments.
Black Bear built its name in production and financing before moving into self-distribution. Festival buzz and strong advance promotion preceded Wicker's release, and Colman's drawing power, the fantasy-romance pairing and a mid-size theater count with healthy per-screen returns carried the opening. Some initial chart estimates put the gross at $5.8 million; Box Office Mojo's figure is $5.7 million.
The film's staying power will test whether Black Bear's distribution model can last. Its 2027 slate includes a new Guy Ritchie film and David Leitch's Jason Statham Stole My Bike, so a solid Wicker hold would strengthen the independent studio's position in the distribution business.
