Austin Completes Safety Upgrades at South First and Radam Lane, Cites 38% Drop in Serious Crashes

The City of Austin, in Travis County, Texas, said in its weekly Mobility News released October 26 that it has completed safety and mobility improvements at the intersection of South First Street and Radam Lane, a location previously identified as a high-crash area. Guided by data-driven planning, the project focused on reducing crash risks, improving accessibility and creating a safer environment for people walking, biking, taking transit and driving.
Key improvements include enhanced sidewalk corners to reduce pedestrian crossing distance and lower vehicle turning speeds, high-visibility crosswalks, new ADA-accessible curb ramps, upgraded traffic signal infrastructure and timing, and wider sidewalks between Clifford Drive and Normandy Street. Two CapMetro bus stops were relocated to provide better access to safe crossing points and more convenient transfers. The project also modified several driveways serving nearby businesses, improving sightlines and shortening, relocating or removing redundant access points. The project was funded by the 2020 Mobility Bonds.
The city's Vision Zero analysis shows that similar major intersection safety projects in Austin are associated with a 38% reduction in serious injury and fatal crashes. The same edition reminded residents that daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1 at 2 a.m., making evening commutes darker and reduced visibility the biggest concern; drivers were advised to stay vigilant around pedestrians and children, and to slow down in neighborhoods and school zones, particularly near bus stops.
Also in the edition: Cyclovia ATX, a free pedestrian street festival with a one-mile bike parade, will be held November 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Windsor Park Branch Library, with part of Westminster Drive closed and the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative recruiting volunteers aged 16 and older; and Travis County's Transportation Blueprint Amendment #1 open house was held the evening of October 26 at the Elroy Library, with online comments accepted through November 20.
