Phoenix Launches One-on-One SNAP Help at Three Family Services Centers on October 26

The City of Phoenix, in Maricopa County, Arizona, announced on October 26 a new initiative offering residents free, one-on-one help applying for or renewing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, guidance on SNAP work requirements, and help after an application is submitted. The city said Arizona has experienced a decline of more than 50% in SNAP enrollment over a 12-month period, following federal changes that tightened work requirements alongside paperwork hurdles that complicate applications and renewals.
'Far too many people are losing their nutritional safety net because of federal changes, paperwork errors, and red tape,' Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement. She said the city's support is intended to help families, children and older residents facing high food costs. Residents may schedule appointments online or seek in-person help at the John F. Long, Sunnyslope or Travis L. Williams Family Services Centers, with walk-ins also welcome; appointments can be held virtually or in person.
According to City Council program documents, the Human Services Department's SNAP navigation service begins in October 2026 and focuses on high-impact intervention points, aiming to complete 4,560 applications, 5,700 recertifications and 2,050 work-requirement submissions. The city recommends bringing identification, proof of address, household income information, Social Security numbers and bank statements, along with records of volunteer hours or participation in federal workforce programs and any Arizona Department of Economic Security notices about renewals.
Phoenix previously launched Targeted One-Time Crisis Assistance under a $3.15 million supplemental allocation for Flexible Financial Assistance approved by the City Council, providing $600 toward a utility account and $100 in transportation assistance to households that completely lost SNAP benefits on or after October 1, 2025; that program began July 6 and remains available while funding lasts.
