Follow-up: Russia and Ukraine Begin Localised Ceasefire Around Oleshky on October 27 for Aid and Evacuations

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

Russia and Ukraine said on Tuesday, October 27, that a localised ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine has begun, to allow a humanitarian operation to start. Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram it stopped shelling in the direction of the Ukrainian city of Kherson from 4 a.m. Moscow time (0100 GMT) to prepare for the operation in Oleshky, just across the Dnipro River from Kherson. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's parliament commissioner for human rights, confirmed in a Facebook post that the ceasefire had started at the same time, writing: 'As head of the Ukrainian negotiating team, I confirm that the Ukrainian side is honoring its commitments.'

The arrangement will enable aid deliveries and evacuations from a frontline town suffering acute shortages of food and medicine. Oleshky lies on the eastern bank of the Dnipro in the Kherson region, opposite Ukrainian-held Kherson; about 24,000 people lived there before the war, and the White House estimates 1,700 to 2,000 remain, mostly older people. Russian troops seized the town in the first days of their February 2022 invasion and have controlled it since. The White House said last week that US first lady Melania Trump helped secure the ceasefire; Ukrainian officials had said the humanitarian operation itself was set for October 29.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, fighting continued: a Russian missile attack on Kyiv on Monday killed at least one person and injured 10, including students at a dormitory, and attacks also killed and injured people in Kharkiv and Pavlohrad, while new explosions were heard in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, a Reuters witness said. GSM has followed the Oleshky arrangement from its announcement through disputes over its start date; Tuesday's confirmed start is the latest step.
