Follow-up: Melania Trump Says Oleshky Ceasefire Has Expanded Across Kherson Region, Two Days Ahead of Schedule

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

US First Lady Melania Trump announced in a post on X on October 27 that a localized humanitarian ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine around Oleshky in Ukraine's southern Kherson region took effect at 3 a.m. Kyiv time (4 a.m. Moscow time) that day, and that the ceasefire area has expanded across more of the Kherson region. The truce is a local one, not a general ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

In the post, the first lady said the timing was accelerated by two days to protect the safety of civilians and to facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian aid, and that the expanded ceasefire area provides safe passage for humanitarian convoys. She said General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff of the Russian armed forces, had confirmed the expanded arrangement.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian parliament's commissioner for human rights, confirmed that the ceasefire took effect at 3 a.m. Kyiv time and that the Ukrainian side was honoring its commitments. Ukraine's ombudsman office later confirmed that the ceasefire was in effect throughout the Kherson region. Russia's defense ministry said on Telegram that Russian forces had stopped shelling in the direction of Kherson and introduced a "silence regime" to prepare for the humanitarian operation near Oleshky.

The localized ceasefire was brokered by Melania Trump; the White House announced on October 23 that the two sides had reached the agreement, with a humanitarian mission originally planned to begin on October 29. Oleshky, on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, has been occupied since the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, and about 1,700 residents remain in the town amid severe shortages of food, medicine and clean water. Under the current arrangement, the ceasefire is expected to last through Saturday (November 1), during which aid will be delivered and civilians who wish to leave will be evacuated.

Outside the ceasefire area, fighting elsewhere in Ukraine continues: on October 27, Kyiv again came under missile attack, with explosions heard in the capital, and Russian strikes on Kyiv the previous night killed at least one person and injured 10, with civilian casualties also reported in Kharkiv.
