Michigan Governor Says Violent Crime at Seven-Year Low in Lansing, Ingham County; Murders Down More Than 40 Percent Since 2021

Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, October 27 — Governor Gretchen Whitmer said violent crime in Michigan has fallen to its lowest level in seven years. According to figures released by the governor's office on October 26, murders in the state have dropped by more than 40 percent since 2021, and robberies have fallen by 50 percent since Whitmer took office. Whitmer said the state has invested nearly $2 billion in public safety to put more officers on the street, support proven violence intervention programs, and take illegal guns out of the hands of people who should not have them. As part of Operation Safe Neighborhoods, law enforcement has seized more than 1,000 illegal guns and conducted more than 11,000 check-ins with people with felony records, while also seizing illegal drugs and ammunition. Whitmer said the purpose of the investment is "to put more officers on the street, support proven violence intervention programs, and take illegal guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them." The governor's office said the decline is associated with multiple measures, including police investment, community intervention and gun seizures, but did not release city-by-city figures in this announcement; the public can watch for the state's complete statistics to follow.
