Jackson Airport Takeover Lawsuit Does Not Halt Terminal Overhaul in Hinds County; New Departure Concourse Plan Enters Design Talks

Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, October 26 — Rosa Beckett, chief executive officer of the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, said plans to overhaul the terminal at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport are moving forward even though litigation over control of the airport remains unresolved. Airport commissioners have selected a development team, and the preliminary plan includes a new departure concourse, a single security checkpoint and demolition of the west concourse. The project has entered the design and negotiations stage, but the total construction cost and final financing plan have not been determined. "Right now, there isn't a constraint with us moving forward because we have to deliver the service to the community regardless of the litigation," Beckett said. She emphasized that the airport continues to operate under its existing governance structure while the lawsuit is active, as it has for the past ten years. The dispute stems from a 2016 state law that would replace the current Jackson airport board with a regional board made up mostly of county and state appointees. The case was tried in July before U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, who has yet to issue a ruling. The airport said flights and passenger services are unaffected while the ruling is pending, and a construction timetable will be announced once the design and financing plans are set.
