One Dead, Four Wounded in Shooting at Vigil in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, on October 26; Police Investigating Burned Red Car

Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey — A shooting at a candlelight vigil on the night of October 26 left five people with gunshot wounds: one person was pronounced dead at the scene and four others were hospitalized. According to USA TODAY's October 27 report, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said police received a report of shots fired just after 9:30 p.m. in a neighborhood where the vigil was taking place, and arriving officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. A spokesperson for the Union County Prosecutor's Office said the other four victims were still being treated at a hospital on Tuesday. CBS News reported that mourners had gathered to remember a man who was fatally shot in the neighborhood about seven years earlier.
Investigators are also examining a red sedan that fled westbound after the shooting and was found burning in Newark about an hour later; authorities are trying to determine whether the car is connected to the incident. As of October 27, no arrests had been made, the motive was not immediately known, and the case remained under investigation.
