Lewes, Delaware Sees a 5.51-Foot High Tide on the Morning of October 27 as King Tides and Onshore Winds Raise Coastal Flood Risk

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · States · GSM News

Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware — NOAA predicted a high tide of 5.51 feet at the Lewes tide station at 9:50 a.m. on October 27, higher than the 5.35 feet predicted on October 26, as Delaware's coast enters a king tide period. A king tide is an exceptionally high tide that occurs under particular astronomical conditions; the tide itself is only part of the flooding equation, and storm surge, persistent onshore winds and waves together determine the actual water level.

Delaware's Coastal Flood Monitoring System tracks tides and water levels at Lewes, Reedy Point, Delaware City and sites along the inland bays, providing real-time observations, while NOAA's Delaware Bay Operational Forecast System provides forecast guidance for water levels in the region. Experts warn that exceptionally high tides can push water above normal levels, putting low-lying coastal roads and properties at risk of standing water around high tide. Residents should watch local coastal flood statements and warnings and avoid driving through flooded road sections at high tide; whether flooding actually develops still depends on wind, waves and other conditions.
