FSIS Alerted Two Grace Chicken Sausage Products on October 6 as Illegally Imported From Jamaica: Distributed in Five States Including Texas; Chicago Consumers Urged to Check

In Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on October 6: two Grace brand ready-to-eat chicken Vienna sausage products were flagged because they were illegally imported from Jamaica. Both are 140-gram cans bearing the establishment number "EST. NO G-01" inside the Jamaican mark of inspection. Chinese-language media in Chicago reminded local consumers on October 27 to check products at home.
According to FSIS, Jamaica is not currently eligible to export meat or poultry products to the United States. The products were discovered during routine FSIS surveillance of imported products in commerce, and the agency is investigating how they entered the country. The importer distributed the products to retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Texas. As of the alert, there had been no confirmed reports of illness or injury linked to the products.
FSIS advises consumers who have the products not to eat them and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Food safety questions can be directed to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the reason for the alert; it has been corrected based on the FSIS announcement.
