Statesboro Council Unanimously Names Assistant City Manager Jason Boyles Sole Finalist for City Manager

Statesboro, Bullock County, Georgia — After an executive session lasting more than three hours on Friday, October 23, the Statesboro City Council voted unanimously to name Assistant City Manager Jason Boyles the sole finalist to become city manager, succeeding Charles Penny, who announced his retirement in June; the news was reported on October 27. Mayor Jonathan McCollar said in a city news release that the city conducted a competitive national search through Developmental Associates. Boyles has served as assistant city manager since 2018 and holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology and a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in local government management, both from Georgia Southern University; he has led major initiatives and worked with Penny on strategic priorities. The council is expected to vote on the appointment at its November 17 meeting at 5:30 p.m., and if appointed, Boyles would take office on January 1, 2027. The city manager is Statesboro's chief administrative officer, responsible for day-to-day operations, carrying out mayor and council policies, and overseeing city finances and workforce.
