Ports of Indiana Awarded $11.2 Million Federal Grant on October 27 to Modernize Burns Harbor Cargo Handling

Portage, Porter County, Indiana — Ports of Indiana announced on October 27 that Burns Harbor has been awarded an $11.2 million federal grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration's Port Infrastructure Development Program to modernize cargo handling, including the specialized equipment needed to support future international container service. The grant is part of a $498 million investment announced the same day by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy covering 35 port projects in 19 states to strengthen U.S. supply chains. The Burns Harbor container handling modernization project totals $14 million, including a $2.8 million match from Ports of Indiana, and will fund a mobile harbor crane, bulk-handling attachments, reach stackers, a top handler and yard trucks. The mobile crane can switch between bulk grabs, breakbulk gear and container spreaders, letting Burns Harbor keep handling steel, bulk goods, construction materials and project cargo while preparing for container business when market demand arises. Governor Mike Braun said the investment will help Burns Harbor move more goods faster and give Indiana farmers and manufacturers a more direct path to customers around the world.
