Maine's Sunday River Fires Up Nearly 200 Snow Guns in the Early Hours of October 27 in Season's Second Snowmaking Push

Newry, Oxford County, Maine — Sunday River ski resort in Maine began its second snowmaking push of the 2026–27 season in the early hours of October 27, taking advantage of a cold snap. The resort said that from 3 a.m., nearly 200 snow guns were running across the Locke, Barker and Jordan areas, making snow on Ecstasy, T2, Cascades, Jim's Whim, Jungle Road, Sunday Punch and Tourist Trap in the Locke and Barker areas, and on Excalibur, Lollapalooza and Rogue Angel in Jordan. The resort planned to keep the guns running through the morning and target another cold snap from the night of October 27 into the morning of October 28. Sunday River is known for one of the longest seasons on the East Coast and has opened in October in past years; it has not yet announced this season's planned opening day but says it will be skiing before long. Forecasts call for overnight temperatures below freezing, then a brief warm-up, with another cold front possible around November 8 bringing more snowmaking windows. Whether the resort opens early awaits official announcements.
