Virginia: Alexandria City Council to Appoint Interim Independent Policing Auditor on the Evening of October 27, Replacing the Auditor Who Resigned This Month

Alexandria, Virginia — The Alexandria City Council was set to appoint an interim independent policing auditor at its meeting on the evening of October 27 at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center; the auditor investigates allegations of police misconduct, and the appointee was to be revealed at the meeting. The auditor reports to the city's Independent Community Policing Review Board, founded in 2021. Ameratu Kamara had served as the city's auditor since January of this year and was the second person to hold the post; the first auditor, Kim Neal, was appointed in 2022 and later died. Kamara resigned earlier this month after the City Council asked for more information on her report into the death of Allan Tucker II in police custody, the first case the review board has investigated in its five years; the auditor was also to investigate a fatal police-involved shooting in the West End in May. The council says it will conduct a national search to fill the position permanently. The review board's October 7 meeting was canceled following Kamara's resignation, and the next is scheduled for November 4. The interim auditor's tenure and the permanent search will be as announced by the council.
