Phillies Hire Former Red Sox Hitting Coach Peter Fatse on October 27; Team Scored Only 713 Runs in 2026

Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania — The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Tuesday, October 27, that they have hired former Boston Red Sox hitting coach Peter Fatse as their new hitting coach, succeeding Kevin Long, who will not return next season.

Fatse previously served as the Red Sox's hitting coach for parts of five seasons after two years as an assistant coach; he was dismissed in April 2026, along with manager Alex Cora and several other coaches, after Boston's slow start.

Philadelphia's offense declined markedly this season: the team scored 713 runs in 2026, ranking 16th among the 30 major league clubs, after scoring between 747 and 796 runs in each of the previous four seasons — the direct backdrop to the coaching change.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly, who received a new two-year contract earlier this month, said in the team's statement that Fatse is an outstanding communicator who values collaboration and whose skills are a strong fit for the club. The team also hired Joe Cronin as assistant hitting coach and retained Edward Gonzalez, who was promoted to the major league staff from player development in 2026. The Phillies hope the new hitting coach will restore their offensive firepower and keep them in contention; spring training plans and staff assignments are subject to later announcements.
