Harry Reid International Airport Completes $71 Million Baggage System Upgrade; 16 Carousels Renewed in Terminal 1

Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada — Harry Reid International Airport announced on October 27 that it has completed a $71 million upgrade of its baggage handling system, a three-year project finished on time and within budget across the airport's two main terminals.
The upgrade is intended to move baggage more smoothly, ease congestion in baggage claim areas and make travel easier for the millions of passengers who pass through Las Vegas each year. Clark County Director of Aviation James Chrisley said airport modernization means investing in the infrastructure and technology that keep operations reliable and efficient, and called the upgrade an important step in improving baggage handling, reducing congestion and creating a smoother, more efficient experience for travelers.
In Terminal 1, crews upgraded eight baggage carousels and fully replaced another eight, and installed new conveyor belts and carousel columns with LED screens. In Terminal 3, the work was primarily technological, updating the computer hardware and software that control the baggage system to improve reliability and efficiency.
The project was funded mainly by federal grants, including funds under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act; a major early award was a $31 million Federal Aviation Administration Airport Terminal Program grant announced in February 2023, when parts of Terminal 1's inbound baggage system were already about 40 years old. Although Las Vegas tourism has declined for more than a year, the airport continues to advance its modernization, with further plans to increase capacity and renew aging infrastructure.
