GM Plans Hybrid Versions of Three Large SUVs at Lansing Plant in Strategic Pivot, Reuters Reports Oct. 27

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan — General Motors is planning to launch hybrid versions of three of its popular large SUVs, Reuters reported on Oct. 27, citing people familiar with the matter. GM plans to build hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia — three mechanically similar models that rank among the company's best sellers in the United States — at its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan.

In a statement issued after the Reuters report, GM said it plans to invest in the Lansing Delta Township plant to prepare for hybrid vehicle production, but gave no timeline or model details. Chief Executive Mary Barra said on the company's earnings call last week that GM will introduce hybrids across multiple segments without adding extra capital spending or engineering investment.

Hybrid sales have grown quickly in the United States in recent years as consumers look to ease the pressure of high fuel prices. GM currently sells only one hybrid in the U.S. market, a version of the Chevrolet Corvette, and dealers have long complained that the lack of hybrid offerings has cost the company market share during the hybrid boom.
