PHOENIX, Maricopa County, Arizona — A Maricopa County Superior Court judge on October 27 sentenced Essa Williams to life in prison, with eligibility to apply for release after 50 years, for shooting Phoenix police officer Tyler Moldovan. On August 13, a jury convicted Williams of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
The shooting happened in 2021. Moldovan had been with the Phoenix Police Department for about nine months when he was ambushed near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road. Williams fired 15 shots; Moldovan was struck multiple times from head to leg, including a wound to the brain stem, and survived after emergency treatment. The case drew sustained attention from the Phoenix police community and residents.
The October 27 sentencing closes a case that has run for several years. Williams will not be eligible to seek release until he has served 50 years.
