Denver RTD: Copper Wire Thefts Down 68% Year Over Year, One Year After Detective Bureau Launch

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · City · GSM News

DENVER, Denver County, Colorado — The Regional Transportation District (RTD) reported on October 27 that copper wire thefts in its system totaled 8 through September 2026, down from 25 in the same period last year, a decrease of 68%.

RTD said its transit police detective bureau, launched just over a year ago, covers 40 municipalities, and that four people have been arrested in related cases this year. The agency also works with scrap yards to keep stolen copper wire from being resold. On October 13, RTD detectives assisted Thornton police in a multi-agency search that led to a suspect's arrest.
