Demolition Begins at Berg Place in Pittsburgh's Carrick: 52 Affordable Senior Apartments to Follow

PITTSBURGH, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania — City officials swung the ceremonial first sledgehammers on October 27 to start demolition of the Berg Place apartment complex in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood. Mayor Corey O'Connor and Councilman Anthony Coghill were joined by officials from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), CHN Housing Partners, and Amani Christian Community Development Corporation, along with Councilperson Bob Charland, State Sen. Jay Costa, and State Rep. Jess Benham. The City of Pittsburgh also confirmed the start of demolition on its official account.
Berg Place, on the Brownsville Road commercial corridor, is a seven-building, 33-unit complex built between 1925 and 1935; city inspectors condemned and vacated it in April 2014 over numerous health and safety violations, and it sat vacant for more than a decade, suffering multiple fires. The URA secured ownership through a sheriff's sale in September 2022 and has worked with CHN Housing Partners on redevelopment since 2023.
The replacement, Carrick Senior Apartments, will have 52 affordable senior units (47 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom). Funding includes a 9% federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit award, $2.45 million from the URA's Rental Gap Program, about $2.3 million in state funding, and project-based voucher and loan support from the city housing authority, among other sources. Demolition is managed by the city's Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections with contractor Deller Professional Services and is expected to finish within the next few weeks. Project details are on the URA's Berg Place project page.
