State Department Marks First Anniversary of Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords: Rubio Pledges Continued U.S. Support for Cambodia and Thailand

Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement in Washington on October 25 marking the first anniversary of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords, saying the United States will continue to work with Cambodia and Thailand to support full implementation of the agreement and help the people of both countries achieve lasting peace.

In the statement, Rubio said that one year ago President Trump helped bring about the peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, ending the two countries' border conflict. On October 26, 2025, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed the accords in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, witnessed by President Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Before the signing, the two countries had fought days of armed clashes along their border in July 2025 that killed and wounded troops and civilians and displaced large numbers of border residents; under a ceasefire arrangement the two sides then gradually withdrew forces and restored border movement.

Rubio said the accords demonstrated the power of American diplomacy to resolve regional conflicts and laid the foundation for lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand, adding that the United States will keep working with both governments to carry out the commitments in the agreement.
