Cavaliers Beat Timberwolves 127-125 in Overtime: Mitchell 26, Edwards 47 in Losing Effort, Rookie Thomas 16 in Debut
The Cleveland Cavaliers rallied from 15 points down to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-125 in overtime at Rocket Arena on Monday night, October 26, handing Minnesota its first loss of the season. Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, including a go-ahead midrange jumper with 1:02 remaining in overtime; Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards finished with a season-high 47 points but missed a wide-open three-pointer with 3.9 seconds left that could have tied the game.
Minnesota led 60-50 at halftime, with its largest lead at 54-39 and Edwards already at 20 points. Cleveland used a 12-0 third-quarter run, fueled by eight points from James Harden, to seize a 70-69 lead, and the teams ended the third quarter tied 86-86. Edwards scored on consecutive possessions to put Minnesota up 108-104 with 1:45 left in regulation, but Harden's floater with 10 seconds remaining tied the game at 113, and Peyton Watson blocked Edwards' attempt in the closing seconds to force overtime. After Mitchell's go-ahead jumper and Edwards' missed three, Watson made two free throws to push the lead to 127-122; Edwards' buzzer-beating three only closed the final margin.
Edwards' 47 points marked the seventh regular-season game of his career with at least 47. Mitchell added seven assists, Harden had nine assists, and Watson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Meleek Thomas, the 34th overall pick in June's draft, scored 16 points off the bench in his NBA debut; Mitchell credited the rookie after the game, saying Thomas was the spark in a first half when the team had nothing going. Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert scored five points without making a field goal. Cleveland improved to 2-1, while Minnesota, which had won its first three games by 20 or more points, fell to 3-1.
