The Detroit Red Wings rallied for a 4-3 shootout victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Monday night, October 26. Goaltender Michal Postava, 24, made 25 saves in his first career NHL start and stopped all three shootout tries, by Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, while Lucas Raymond roofed a wrist shot in the first round for what proved to be the game-winner. Captain Dylan Larkin scored a 6-on-5 goal with 1:17 remaining to force overtime.
Viktor Arvidsson scored a goal and had an assist, Raymond had two assists and Emmitt Finnie also scored for Detroit, which finished its four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 mark, Reuters reported. Colton Dach had a goal and an assist, and Vasily Podkolzin and Isaac Howard also scored for Edmonton; Tristan Jarry finished with 26 saves.
Edmonton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period on Podkolzin's eighth goal. Arvidsson tied it on a second-period power play, Howard's power-play goal restored Edmonton's lead early in the third, Finnie tied it 30 seconds later, and Dach put Edmonton back in front with 3:28 remaining before Larkin's equalizer. According to The Canadian Press, McDavid extended his season-opening point streak to 12 games with 34 points, an Oilers record for points before November 1, and matched the longest season-opening assist streak in NHL history; Oilers forward Zach Hyman left the game with what appeared to be a concussion.
Detroit improved to 5-4-3 and Edmonton fell to 8-2-2, according to The Canadian Press. The Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, and the Oilers host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
