Atlanta Self-Storage Permit Moratorium May Be Extended 60 Days: Council Committee Advances Measure, Full Council Vote Pending

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

In Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, the City Council's Zoning Committee voted on October 26 to give a favorable recommendation to a proposal extending the citywide moratorium on self-storage development permits by another 60 days, sending the measure to the full Council. The current moratorium expires on January 11, 2027; if the extension is approved, Atlanta will not accept new self-storage permit applications until March 2027.

The pause began in June 2026, when Mayor Andre Dickens signed an executive order halting self-storage applications; the Council then passed a 180-day moratorium in July. On October 5, the Council passed Ordinance 26-O-1397, requiring new self-storage facilities to obtain a special use permit.

The extension was introduced by Councilmembers Dustin Hillis and Andrea L. Boone. 'This ordinance gives us the time to ensure that future development responds to the City's long-term planning goals,' Hillis said. In launching the pause, Mayor Dickens said Atlanta is growing and the city has a responsibility to guide how it grows.

No date has been announced for the full Council vote. If the extension passes, the city plans to use the time to finish revising its siting and zoning rules for self-storage facilities.
