Border Patrol Seizes 51.9 Pounds of Fentanyl on Interstate 15 in San Diego County, California

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Border Patrol agents in the San Diego Sector seized approximately 51.9 pounds of suspected fentanyl during anti-smuggling operations along Interstate 15 this month, and that the driver was transferred to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for criminal prosecution. According to CBP, agents encountered a northbound Honda CR-V that exited at Mission Road, turned and stopped on its own in the southbound lanes of the highway. During a consensual encounter, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted agents to the vehicle, and a search found a duffel bag in the backseat containing 22 bundles of suspected narcotics weighing about 51.9 pounds in total; preliminary testing indicated the presence of fentanyl. The driver and the narcotics were taken to the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station for processing before the transfer to the DEA.
"Fentanyl poses a serious threat to our communities, and our agents stayed committed to prevent these deadly drugs from reaching our streets," said Justin De La Torre, chief patrol agent of the San Diego Sector, who also cited the professionalism of the agents and the importance of partnerships in combating drug trafficking.
