USDA Forecasts Record U.S. Canola Production of 5.4 Billion Pounds for 2026/27, Corrects September Corn Data

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its latest radio features that U.S. canola production for 2026/27 is forecast to reach a record 5.4 billion pounds, as demand from the food and biofuel sectors encourages farmers to plant more, and that it has corrected its September corn data. According to USDA, the September corn figures were corrected due to a processing error, while the October production and yield forecasts remain unchanged. Canola is widely used for cooking oil and as a biofuel feedstock; U.S. planted area has grown in recent years, and the department expects production in the new marketing year to set a record.
At the state level, North Dakota is the largest canola-producing state in the country. According to figures from the October crop production report summarized by the USDA Economic Research Service, North Dakota planted 2.33 million acres of canola in 2026, up 29 percent from last year, with acreage also rising in Minnesota, Montana, Washington, Oklahoma and Kansas. The national average yield is forecast at 1,811 pounds per acre, about 10 percent below last year.
