Born Susan Jane Miller on August 14, 1946, in Los Angeles and raised in Rockford, Illinois, Saint James modeled before heading to Hollywood. Her breakthrough came in 1968 on NBC's "The Name of the Game," playing editorial assistant Peggy Maxwell, a role that won her the 1969 Emmy Award for supporting actress; across her career she earned eight Emmy nominations and one win.
From 1971, she starred opposite Rock Hudson for five seasons of the mystery series "McMillan & Wife," playing Sally McMillan, and became one of the defining faces of 1970s American television. In 1984 she returned in CBS's "Kate & Allie," co-starring with Jane Curtin as two divorced women raising their children together; the sitcom ran six seasons until 1989 and brought her further Emmy nominations. Her films included the 1979 comedy "Love at First Bite."
Saint James married NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol in 1981; their son Teddy died in a plane crash in 2004 at age 14. She served on the boards of organizations including the Special Olympics and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008. She is survived by her husband, four children, seven grandchildren and her sister.
