L.A. City Council Approves Two Film-Friendly Motions: Free Permits for Microshoots, $1-a-Day City Property for Productions

The Los Angeles City Council on Oct. 27 approved two motions by Councilmember Adrin Nazarian aimed at cutting red tape for small productions, The Hollywood Reporter reported: a free permit process for “microshoots” of 10 or fewer people, and access to city-owned property for film and television productions at $1 per day.
The first motion directs city departments to create a streamlined, no-fee permit for small crews, lowering the barrier for independent filmmakers. The second opens underused city-owned properties to productions at a nominal $1-a-day rate as part of the city's effort to keep shooting in Los Angeles.
The votes come as local production continues to slide: according to permitting agency FilmLA, shoot days in the Los Angeles area are down 5% year over year and 11% from the previous quarter. At the state level, California has raised its film and television tax credit from $330 million to $750 million a year, and the city has been promoting its “Keep Hollywood Home” initiative.
