In an NBA game on the night of October 27 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, the New York Knicks defeated the Detroit Pistons 111-97 for their first win of the season, avoiding becoming the first defending champion to open 0-4 since the 1969-70 Boston Celtics, as center Karl-Anthony Towns posted a game-high 27 points and 20 rebounds.

New York trailed by 13 points in the first quarter before taking a 51-50 halftime lead. The third quarter was the turning point: the Knicks outscored Detroit 37-13, with Towns scoring 13 points in the period, and a Landry Shamet 3-pointer pushed the lead beyond 20. Jalen Brunson added 23 points and seven assists, OG Anunoby and reserve Shamet scored 13 apiece, and Mikal Bridges finished with 12.

For Detroit, Paul Reed had 22 points and nine rebounds, Cade Cunningham totaled 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, and Duncan Robinson scored 12. The Pistons had been seeking their first 4-0 start since the 2018-19 season, and the loss also snapped New York's six-game losing streak against Detroit.
