Detroit Activists Report ICE 'Surge' in Southwest Detroit Near Schools and an Early-Voting Site; ICE Has Not Commented

DETROIT, Wayne County, Michigan — Community activists in Southwest Detroit report that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers carried out stops in several locations in the neighborhood this week, in what the activists describe as a surge; they allege that U.S. citizens were among those stopped. ICE did not immediately return the Detroit Free Press's requests for comment, and the account below reflects the activists' reporting, which has not been officially confirmed.
According to the Free Press's October 28 report, the People's Assembly and other groups described ICE stops along Vernor Highway and around Clark Park, Western International High School and the Maybury and Earhart elementary schools. The report noted that an early-voting station is located inside Clark Park, a point raised by the People's Assembly.
Community leader Jessica Avila told the paper she had been documenting the stops and arrests in Southwest Detroit on Wednesday morning. Some advocates said they view the enforcement activity as voter intimidation; Andrew Reinel of 482 Forward was quoted to that effect.
The Free Press reported that ICE did not immediately respond to its requests for comment. GSM will follow up with any official response.
