MONTGOMERY, Montgomery County, Alabama — Gov. Kay Ivey on Oct. 28 proclaimed Oct. 28, 2026, as Alabama First Responders Day, honoring the state's first responders who protect lives and property and serve their fellow Alabamians in moments of crisis. Those honored include firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians, 911 dispatchers, corrections officers and K-9 teams across the public safety community.

In her proclamation, Ivey said most Alabamians will never know the name of the dispatcher who sent help or the responder standing ready while their own family slept, yet when the call for help comes, people entrust everything to them. "Behind every uniform is someone with a family waiting at home, yet they show up for ours. That is an extraordinary commitment," she said.

Ivey said her administration has worked with the state legislature to strengthen support for first responders, including funding for emergency equipment and training, cancer coverage for firefighters, tax relief for qualifying volunteer responders, scholarships for law enforcement families, pay raises for corrections officers, and legislation supporting EMS teams and authorizing emergency care and transport for K-9s injured in the line of duty. She called on all Alabamians to join in thanking the responders who serve their communities every day.
