Coastal Flood Advisory for Hooper Bay, Alaska, Oct. 29–31: Bering Sea Storm to Push Tides 2 to 4 Feet Above Normal High Tide

HOOPER BAY, Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska — The National Weather Service office in Fairbanks issued a coastal flood advisory in the early hours of Oct. 28, in effect from 7 a.m. Oct. 29 to 1 a.m. Oct. 31 Alaska Daylight Time. A Bering Sea storm associated with the remnants of Typhoon Champi is forecast to push water levels at Hooper Bay 2 to 4 feet above normal high tide, with other parts of the Yukon Delta coast expected to see levels 1 to 3 feet above normal.
Forecasters said elevated water during the high tides of Oct. 29 and 30 could threaten beachfront property, the lowest-lying buildings and community access routes, and repeated high tides could cause localized beach erosion. In its Oct. 28 morning forecast discussion, the Fairbanks office said the storm track shifting south toward Bristol Bay had reduced the coastal threat, though Hooper Bay still faces a minor flooding risk.
Alaska's Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management reported on Oct. 27 that power has been restored in Kivalina, where about 25 people sheltered at the school on the night of Oct. 26, with supplies and medical staff on site; the shelter is expected to remain open for several more days.
