Phoenix Sky Harbor Holds Triennial Full-Scale Emergency Drill on Oct. 28 With 30-Plus Agencies and Nearly 300 Volunteers

PHOENIX, Maricopa County, Arizona — Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport held a full-scale emergency exercise on the afternoon of Oct. 28, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The drill, required by the federal government every three years, was organized by the Phoenix Aviation Department to test the airport's coordinated response to a simulated emergency. Airport officials said the exercise did not affect airport operations.
The Phoenix police and fire departments and more than 30 other agencies and partners took part, along with nearly 300 volunteers who played passengers and family members around the airport, wearing multi-colored, white or yellow vests so travelers and responders could identify them as drill participants. The specific scenario was kept confidential in advance; officials said only that it would involve an emergency aboard a passenger aircraft, and that travelers and drivers passing the airport might see colored smoke.
Airport public information manager Greg Roybal said every exercise is a chance to check how well the emergency plan works and where coordination can improve, and that the better prepared responders are, the safer travelers are.
