Colorado's Mesa County Asks Gov. Polis for More Senior Services Funding; 87 Seniors on Meal-Delivery Waitlist

MESA COUNTY, Colorado — The Mesa County Board of Commissioners voted on Oct. 28 to send a letter to Gov. Jared Polis formally asking the state to consider increased funding for senior services in the next fiscal year's state budget.

The commissioners noted that Colorado is one of the fastest-aging states in the nation, with one in five residents aged 60 or older statewide, a share that rises to one in four in Mesa County. In Mesa County, just three long-term care ombudsmen serve as many as 34 care facilities and can assist 1,781 residents; in addition, 87 seniors are on a waitlist for home-delivered meals, including a 95-year-old amputee veteran.

The county's letter says state support touches seniors' daily lives: ombudsmen help residents of care facilities protect their rights, while meal delivery brings nutritious food to homebound seniors. Despite the state's fiscal challenges, the commissioners said, helping older Coloradans age with dignity, health and independence is essential, and they asked the governor to make senior services a priority in the budget.
