Big Ten Caps School-Arranged Third-Party NIL Deals at $27.5 Million a School, Plus $22 Million in Direct Revenue Sharing

ROSEMONT, Cook County, Illinois — The Big Ten Conference, headquartered in Rosemont, announced on Oct. 28 that its university presidents and chancellors have approved a new rule limiting member schools' involvement in arranging third-party name, image and likeness (NIL) deals. Each school's arranged third-party NIL deals may total no more than $27.5 million, on top of $22 million in direct revenue sharing, for a combined cap of about $49 million.

The rule takes effect immediately, with escalating financial penalties and other discipline for violations. The conference said the rule is designed to align with the College Athletics Protection Act pending in Congress: the bill passed the Senate by a wide margin on Sept. 28, and the House is set to vote after it reconvenes on Nov. 9.

Pamela Whitten, president of Indiana University and chair of the Big Ten's council of presidents and chancellors, said that while awaiting the bill's passage, member schools must be able to begin planning, budgeting and building rosters under the bill's economic framework, and that the rule will smooth the transition and shows the conference's support for the legislation. With college athlete pay soaring and transfer restrictions loosening, the bill and the conference rule aim to set boundaries for the economics of college sports.
