Harlan High Teacher Tyler Saylor Surprised With $25,000 Milken Educator Award at School Assembly in Kentucky

HARLAN, Harlan County, Kentucky — Harlan High School English teacher Tyler Saylor received a surprise at a school assembly on Oct. 28: he was presented with a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, along with a $25,000 cash prize with no restrictions on its use. Kentucky Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher and Milken Educator Awards senior vice president Stephanie Bishop presented the award, with students, staff, district leaders and state officials in attendance.
Saylor said afterward that he was deeply honored to work alongside some of the finest educators in the state, and that he was nearly moved to tears when he heard his name called. Fletcher said Saylor has devoted his career to giving Harlan's students an education as solid and vibrant as any in Kentucky, encouraging them to aim high and chase their dreams — the kind of educator who gives students the skills and confidence to pursue their own dreams.
The Milken Educator Awards, dubbed the "Oscars of Teaching" by the media, have honored outstanding teachers for 40 years. District officials said the award recognizes both Saylor's personal dedication and the work of the whole teaching team.
