Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor Undergoes Season-Ending Foot Surgery; Backup for Oct. 31 Texas Game to Be Named on Game Night

STARKVILLE, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi — Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor successfully underwent season-ending foot surgery on the morning of Oct. 28. Head coach Jeff Lebby spoke with Taylor by video call after the surgery and said he was in good spirits. The team had announced the surgery decision on Oct. 27; Taylor had played hurt through the last three games, and Lebby said the decision, made jointly by the team and all parties, was the right one.

Mississippi State is 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference. The team travels to face No. 11 Texas on Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m., with the game televised on ESPN.

The starting job will go to one of two backups: former walk-on Billy Puckett, who started against LSU when Taylor was hurt and came on in relief in two other games Taylor left early; or A.J. Swann, an Appalachian State transfer who has not appeared this season but has 18 career starts. Lebby said the starter will not be named until game night, and that both quarterbacks started the week of practice well.
