Montana's Augusta Check Station Logs 235 Hunters on Opening Weekend, Elk Harvest 83% Above the 10-Year Average
AUGUSTA, Lewis and Clark County, Montana — The Augusta game check station run by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) logged 235 hunter visits on the opening weekend of the 2026 general rifle season, with deer and elk harvests both above average, FWP announced on October 28.
The elk harvest was 83% above the 10-year average, with 22 elk checked; the deer harvest rose 11%, with 17 white-tailed deer and 14 mule deer, along with 3 pronghorn and 1 wolf. The Augusta station is the only biological check station in FWP Region 4, open 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and until 10 p.m. on weekends.
FWP reminds hunters that they must stop at any check station whether or not they harvested an animal; the animal and hunter trend data collected at biological check stations supports statewide wildlife management. The 2026 general deer and elk season runs through Sunday, November 29.
